A Devotional Thought

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice.” Isaiah 42:3

This is my favorite verse in the Bible. I know I say that a lot but this time I really mean it. My all-time favorite.

These are hard and challenging times for all of us. Many of us can probably identify with the “bruised reed” and the “faintly burning wick” in this verse. Consider those images of frailty.

A fully healthy reed isn’t really very strong to begin with. But a bruised reed? It’s just barely hanging on and trying not to flop over. And a faintly burning wick? Even a wick that is burning strongly is still just a stiff breeze away from blowing out.

This verse gives us a picture of the loving gentleness of our Lord and Savior. He knows our frailty and he handles us with compassion. He gently cares for the bruised reed so as not to break it. He delicately fans the faintly burning wick into flame without quenching it. What a beautiful and comforting image.

I pray that you (and I) will experience the loving, healing touch of our God this week. He is both glorious and gentle at the same time.

May you be blessed,

Pastor Jason
